What is ISO 17712?

1. ISO

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a global standardization organization responsible for developing and publishing standards for various industries. ISO provides requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics. Its standards are mainly to ensure the quality and safety of products, services and systems.

2. 177122

17712 is the ISO standard number for security seals used for transport and storage of goods. The standard defines the performance requirements, test methods, strength and durability of seals to ensure their security and effective protection against tampering or theft of goods during transport.

The Relationship Between ISO 17712 and Security Seals

ISO 17712 is closely related to security seals as it is the international standard that defines the requirements for high-security seals (HSS) used in cargo containers, trucks, warehouse doors, and other transport security applications. This standard ensures that security seals meet strict criteria for strength, tamper evidence, and manufacturing security.

Three levels of security seal strength are defined:

  • High-Security Seals (HSS) – The highest level of security, compliant with customs regulations (e.g., C-TPAT, ISPS).

  • Security Seals (S) – Offer a moderate level of security but do not meet HSS standards.

  • Indicative Seals (I) – Used primarily for identification with minimal security protection.

How to Test for ISO 17712 Compliance?

Security seals need to be tested by an independent third-party laboratory to verify the classification of the security seal. The testing laboratory also needs to be accredited according to ISO 17025 to conduct ISO 17712 testing.
1. Understand the ISO 17712 Requirements

First, you need to be familiar with the ISO 17712 standard. This standard describes the specific requirements for the strength, durability and tamper-proof functions of security seals. For example, the most important physical strength, tamper evidence, Manufacturer’s security processes

2. Independent Testing for Physical Strength

Security seals must undergo physical strength tests to ensure they can withstand various types of forces. These tests include tensile strength, cut resistance, shear resistance, and fracture resistance.

3. Tamper Evidence Testing

ISO 17712 requires that if someone attempts to open or alter a security seal, the seal must be tamper-evident. This means you need to test whether the tamper-evident features of the seal are working as intended.

4.Manufacturer’s Security Processes Audit

Manufacturer’s security-related business processes must be audited. On-site inspection by an ISO-accredited auditor who will evaluate your manufacturing facilities and business processes

5. Submit for Certification

After completing the necessary tests and audits, you can submit the results to a third-party certification body. These organizations will verify the results and determine if your security seals meet ISO 17712 standards.

More information and details about ISO 17712 can be found in ISO’s official documentation.
